Direct object pronouns come before the verb, can refer to people (mi, ti, lo, la, La, ci, vi, li, le) or to things (lo, la, li, le).
The direct object pronoun answers the question "What?" or "Who?"

The indirect object answers the question "to whom?" or "for whom?". In Italian, they are used to replace a person (or a personified animal).

(say out loud, turn off your brain).
Scrivo a mia mamma. Le scrivo.

Chiedo alle ragazze. Gli chiedo.
Telefono a Davide. Gli telefono.
Telefono ai cugini. Gli telefono.
Rispondo a Maria. Le rispondo.

Used after a preposition:
La ricetta è per te.
Sono arrivato dopo di lui.
Andiamo dopo Nadine. Andiamo dopo di lei.
You will have to add "di" when the pronoun follows senza, dopo, sotto, su, verso.

Used after a verb to emphasize the object:
Amo solamente lui.

Used to distinguish between two objects:
Hai parlato con me o con l'altro infermiere?

2. Handout (white) "Che bello!" (click here for handout) In the first drawing, the girl is looking out of her window at a beautiful day. With that clue, you might be able to match each drawing in Part 1 with each "esprimere" in Part 2.
Then memorize all of the "esprimere gioia" and "esprimere rammarico, disappunto" at the bottom of the page. We'll be working with all of these and more next time.
