- Qualche, tutta, ogni, alcuni... from pages 279 - 280.
To express "some" or "a few" before a noun, you can use "qualche", "alcuni/alcune" or "dei/degli/delle"
In English we say "Some houses are expensive", but in Italian we say:
Qualche casa è cara. SINGULAR!
Qualche appartamento è libero. (SINGULAR!) - Some apartments are available.
Degli appartamenti sono liberi. (didn't use qualche, so it is not singular)
Alcuni appartamenti sono liberi. (always PLURAL with "alcuni")
A qualche persona piace il calore. - Some people like the heat. (Starring Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis)
"Tutto/tutta/tutti/tutte" (followed by the definite article) before a noun: expresses "all" or "every".
"Ogni" before a noun: expresses "each" or "every".
Ogni is always singular.
Often "tutto/tutti..." and "ogni" express the same idea.
A tutta la gente piace la pizza.
Ad ogni persona piace la pizza.
Tutte le volte che vado in Italia... (plural "volte" because of "Tutte") - Every time I go to Italy...
Ogni volta che vado in Italia... (singular "volta" because of "Ogni") - Every time I go to Italy...
Ogni giorno - Every day.
Tutti i giorni - Every day.

-Compiti (homework)
1. Esercizi: pagina 281 A & B. (click here for answers) Here are instructions in English:
Hint: both of these exercises work better if you pretend you are two people having a conversation.
A."Don't generalize". You and your housemate are looking for a new house. Correct their generalizations with "qualche". Esempio: 1. Tutti i palazzi hanno l'ascensore. - All of the apartment houses have an elevator. 2. (your response) Qualche palazzo ha l'ascensore. (Qualche is always singular, so the noun and the verb have to be singular.)
B. "We're looking for a house." Ask some questions of a friend. In the answer from the friend, you must use an aggettivo indefinito: qualche, alcuni, di... First you will be making up a question which does NOT use un aggettivo indefinito, so make the noun plural. Then you will pretend you are the other person, and answer that question using an aggettivo indefinito: if you use "qualche" you will make the answer singular, if you use "alcuni-alcune" or "dei-degli-delle" your answer will have to be plural.
Esempio: Did you find interesting ads? I found some interesting ads. (or) I found a few interesting ads.
2. Read: You can start studying the indefinite pronouns, on page 282. Read and study both sidebars on pages 282 - 283.
3. Calendario. Read the phrase of the day each day in the little calendar. Try to memorize any phrases or vocabulary which you think might be useful to you.
4. Practice your advertisement (which you got at the end of class Sept. 21) with lots of excitement in your voice! Rehearse presenting your ad as a pubblicità. You don't need to have it finished before the next class: we'll develop and perfect them over the next few weeks.
