- Il tuo figo della settimana: Giordano Bruno. (1548 – 17 febbraio 1600) è stato un filosofo, scrittore e frate domenicano italiano, condannato al rogo dall'Inquisizione cattolica per eresia.

- direct vs. indirect objects.
Some Italian verbs take an indirect object. We made a list of verbs to practice:
telefonare a - to telephone
rispondere a - to answer

Some verbs take both a direct and an indirect object:
offrire a - Offro una birra a Gina. - I offer a beer (d.o.) to Gina (i.o.)
dare a - Do un libro al ragazzo. - I give a book (d.o.) to the boy(i.o.)
domandare a, chiedere a
- to ask - Chiedo una forchetta al cameriere. - I ask the waiter (i.o.) for a fork (d.o.)
preparare per - Prepariamo una cena per i cugini. - We are preparing a dinner (d.o.) for our cousins (i.o.)

Some Italian verbs take a direct object. We made a list of these verbs to practice:
aspettare - to wait for
ascoltare - to listen to
capire - to understand
pagare - to pay for
guardare - to watch, to look at
trovare - to find "Li trovo intelligenti". - I find them intelligent.
cercare - to look for
chiamare - to call

- Agreeing the participio passato. If you use a direct object pronoun (lo, la, li, le) with a verb that takes avere as its auxiliary verb, you must agree the past participle with the direct object pronoun:
Ho mangiato la pizza. L'ho mangiata. Notice how mangiato becomes mangiata when you change the pizza into a feminine pronoun.

We started practicing practical Italian sentences and questions for typical everyday situations. There is always more than one correct way to say these.

1. Listen to Audio CD unit 15 and 16 over the next two weeks, including listening along with the little reading booklet if you have it.

2. Practice these verbs by writing out original sentences for each verb in order to practice them with direct and indirect object pronouns. You can write them out once with nouns, if practical, then again substituting pronouns.
For example:
Chiedo una birra alla cameriera. - Le chiedo una birra. (in Italian, literally: I ask of her a beer.)
Le telefono domani, signora. (lit: To you I'll telephone tomorrow, signora.)
Rispondo al vigile. Gli rispondo. - (I answer to the traffic policeman.)
Rispondo a Maria. Le rispondo.
Domando a voi. Vi domando.
Telefono ai cugini. Gli telefono.
Cerchiamo Gino e Ada. Li cerchiamo.
Chi aspetti, Fracesca? Aspetto Dario. Lo aspetto.

Here are the verbs to practice:

indirect object:

both a direct and an indirect object: (When you're writing your sentences, if you don't know the double-object pronouns (glielo, gliela, ce lo...) then just change the indirect object to a pronoun.)

- I offer her a beer.
dare a - Do un libro al ragazzo. - I give a book (d.o.) to the boy(i.o.)

3. Dialogo. Read the dialogue on page 151, and be ready to act it out in class with feeling!!

4. Read page 152. Do esercizi A, B, C, D, and E. We might do B, C, and D aloud in class. So say them out loud as you do them.
We'll post and send answers before the next class. But remember, we're out of town from Monday July 20 until Monday July 27. You can e-mail Nadine if you have questions before then.

5. Read page 154 "I pasti italiani."

6. Memorize How would you say for the al ristorante section. You only have to memorize one version for each sentence. (There are many correct ways to say each phrase or question):

al ristorante: How would you...

Ask what time they open. A che ora è aperto il ristorante? A che ora apre il ristorante? Quando aprite? Quando siete aperti?

Ask the waiter what he would recommend. Che cosa mi consiglia? Che cosa mi suggerisce? Che cosa mi consiglierebbe?

Attract the attention of the waitress. Scusi! Mi scusi! Signorina... Cameriera...

Ask for a menu. Vorrei il menu. Mi porta il / un menu? Mi dia il menu, per favore. Potrebbe darme il menu?

Ask if there is a specialty of the house. C'è una specialità della casa? Qual è la specialità della casa?

Ask for mineral water. Un'acqua minerale, per favore. Vorrei dell'acqua minerale, per favore. Prendo un'acqua minerale, per favore. (senza gas, non frizzante)

Ask for bread. Vorrei del pane.

Ask for another glass of wine. Vorrei un altro bicchiere di vino, per favore.

Ask for the bill. Il conto, per favore. Vorrei il conto... Mi dia il conto per favore! Mi da il conto?


7. (optional) Write a paragraph or page to hand in or to email to Nadine. It could be what you did during the week, or it could be related to the vocabulary for the week. When you talk in class about your week, we'll try to do it without reading what you wrote.
