We practiced asking each other:
"Che cosa ti piace fare nel tuo tempo libero?"
Mi piace leggere fumetti e dormire.
"Che cosa piace fare a Margherita?"
Le piace andare a teatro.
"Quali attori ti piacciono?"
Mi piacciono Johnny Depp e Roberto Benigni.

In the passato prossimo, the verb piacere takes essere as its auxiliary, which means that the past participle has to agree with the subject.
Mi è piaciuto il film. (To me / was pleasing / the film) - I liked the film. "il film" is the subject.
Mi è piaciuta la festa. "la festa" is the subject.
Mi sono piaciuti i film. "i film" is the subject.
Mi sono piaciute le feste. "le feste" is the subject.

- Direct object? or Indirect object? Franco e Ida. We went over the handout "Franco e Ida" to practice verbs that take a direct object and verbs that take an indirect object.

For this exercise, you have to choose between the direct object pronouns "him" and "her"( "lo" e "la") and between indirect object pronouns "to him" "to her" ( "gli" e "le").

Franco saluta Ida. Franco la saluta. Salutare takes a direct object.

Franco risponde a Ida. Franco le risponde. Rispondere takes an indirect object.
You know it's an indirect object when you see an "a" in front of it!

-Imperfetto.

We practiced conjugating verbs in the imperfetto.
The imperfetto expresses the idea of an action in the past that was ongoing.

The imperfetto can be translated into English with:
Suonavo il piano.
I used to play the piano.
I would play the piano... (meaning: "I used to play the piano.")
I was playing the piano... (the imperfect sets the scene, when something else happened)
I was playing the piano. (ongoing in the past, with no mention of starting or stopping)

Here's a comparison with the other past tense we have studied, the passato prossimo.
L'imperfetto: Leggevo un buon libro. - I was reading a good book.
Il passato prossimo: Ho letto un buon libro. - I read a good book. (or) I have read a good book.
L'imperfetto: Cantavamo ogni sera. - We used to sing every evening.
Il passato prossimo: Abbiamo cantato ieri sera. - We sang last night.

L'imperfetto is a one-word conjugation, formed by taking the stem of the verb and adding these endings:

essere and fare have irregular stems in the imperfetto:

essere:

There is a chart in Practice Set 95 which will help you remember where the stress falls in the imperfetto.

Imperfetto answers the question:
  • What was going on?
  • What did you used to do?
Passato prossimo answers the question:
  • What happened?

Sometimes the difference is very distinct. Sometimes changing the tense makes a slight change in emphasis in the sentence.

Distinct. Each of these examples would require the appropriate tense:
Faceva bel tempo. It was nice weather. (imperfetto)
Pioveva quando Giovanni è arrivato. It was raining (imperfetto) when Giovanni arrived (passato prossimo).
È piovuto per dieci minuti. It rained (passato prossimo) for ten minutes.

Interchangeable. With this example, you could use either tense:
Avevo un appuntamento con Claudio. (imperfetto to emphasize the situation)
Ho avuto un appuntamento con Claudio. (passato prossimo to emphasize the action)

1. Imperfetto. Drill yourself! Practice the conjugations of verbs in the imperfetto. Refer to the chart on page 237 to make sure that you're getting the emphasis on the right syllable. You can do Practice Sets 95 and 96.

2. Imperfetto. Handout 23 (white). Double-sided: (clicca qui p. 105) (clicca qui p.107) There are only six sentences to the page 105 exercises, but there is a big chart of examples on page 107 to help you to decide when to use imperfetto and when to use the passato prossimo.
You can also try to translate the big chart.

3. Imperfetto vs. passato prossimo.. Handout 24. "La pratica in coppia..." (pink) we will do in class next week. You can practice it and read the little Favola di Hansel e Gretel on the back. It's good practice to read aloud!

4.Alla stazione (two sides). (click here for the handout). This is a two way translation. It has some adverbs and adverbial phrases. Read it, practice it ALOUD. We did side one in class. I want you to use the sentences as templates to write (to turn in) sentences using these adverbs and phrases. già, fa, appena, adesso, ora, ancora, in orario, in anticipo, in ritardo. How about some sentences with volerci, insieme?
