-Gli argomenti (the topics): What we did in class, and more.
-Warmup:
Com'è andata la settimana? - How did the week go?
We asked each other how the week went. We wrote the responses up on the board. And then we corrected them.
Cos'è successo la settimana scorsa? - What happened last week?
Cosa mi racconti della settimana? - What can you tell me about the week?
Hai fatto qualcosa di bello la settimana scorsa? - Did you do anything nice last week?
Cosa c'è di nuovo? - What's new?
topics:
- Direct object? or Indirect object?
- Pronomi
-Direct object pronouns:
mi__________ci
ti___________vi
lo___________li
la___________le
La
- Indirect object pronouns:
mi__________ci
ti___________vi
gli__________gli
le__________
Le
The direct object answers the question "Who?" or "What?" asked after the verb.
(example) Vedo Mario. Lo vedo. (I see Mario. I see him.)
Mangio la pizza. La mangio.
_
In contrast, indirect object pronouns answer the question "To whom?" or "For whom?". The indirect object (as a noun) is always preceeded by "a" or "per".
(example) Do la pizza a Mario. Gli do la pizza. (I give the pizza to Mario. To him, I give the pizza.)
Compro una cartolina per Maria. Le compro una cartolina. (I'm buying a postcard for her.)
A Luisa piace l'appartamento. Le piace l'appartamento. - (The apartment is pleasing to Luisa. The apartment is pleasing to her.)
The indirect object pronouns mi ti ci vi are the same as the direct object pronouns. In Italian, indirect object pronouns differ from direct object pronouns only in the third-person:
to / for him - gli
to / for her - le
to / for you (formal) - Le
to / for them - gli
(You may hear someone use "loro": to / for them - loro) (it comes after the verb)
- Franco e Ida. We went over the handout "Franco e Ida" to practice verbs that take a direct object and verbs that take an indirect object.
For this exercise, you have to choose between the direct object pronouns "him" and "her"( "lo" e "la")
and between indirect object pronouns "to him" "to her" ( "gli" e "le").
Franco saluta Ida. Franco la saluta. Salutare takes a direct object.
Franco risponde a Ida. Franco le risponde. Rispondere takes an indirect object.
- Imperativo. We went over the homework. We practiced asking directions, and giving directions in the formal command.
Senta!
Vada!
Giri!
Venga con me!
Continui!
Stia attento/a!
Giri a destra!
- Piacere.
You say "Piacere" when you meet someone.
"Mi piace" when one thing is pleasing to you (to say you like something)
"Mi piacciono" when more than one thing is pleasing to you.
"Non mi piace" when one thing displeases you (to say you don't like something)
"Non mi piacciono" when more than one thing displeases you.
"Mi piace sciare" - I like to ski. "To ski" is the subject. "Mi" is the indirect object of the verb "piacere". (do you remember the indirect object pronouns? mi, ti, le, gli, Le, ci, vi, gli)
"Le piace?" - Does she like it? (or) Do you (formal) like it?
"Gli piace?" - Does he like it? (or) Do they like it?
"Mi piacciono la festa e la musica." The party and the music are pleasing to me. (I like the party and the music.) The verb is plural because the subject is plural: "la festa e la musica" is the subject. "Mi" is the indirect object of "piacere".
Even though we didn't get to the passato prossimo in class, here it is:
In the passato prossimo, the verb piacere takes essere as its auxiliary, which means that the past participle has to agree with the subject.
Mi è piaciuto il film. (To me / was pleasing / the film) - I liked the film. "il film" is the subject.
Mi è piaciuta la festa. "la festa" is the subject.
Mi sono piaciuti i film. "i film" is the subject.
Mi sono piaciute le feste. "le feste" is the subject.
- Dylan Dog. We read the weird fumetto.
-Parole da ricordare (Words to remember, words that came up in class)
"Non faccia complimenti!"- Don't stand on ceremony! (polite command)
pure- as in "Dimmi pure!"- softens a command
inoltre - moreover, also, furthermore, besides...
riuscire a... fare qualcosa - to succeed in doing something
Non ce la faccio più. - I can't do this any more
Non ne posso più. - I can't any more!
un informazione - one piece of information
informazioni - information
raggiungere - to reach, to arrive

Number 7. "sognare" takes a direct object.
Number 5 and 6. "mancare" works just the same as "piacere". I miss you = Mi manchi. = To me, you are missing. If you haven't studied "piacere", skip 5 and 6.
On part P. on the back, I want you to hand in the answers next week.
5.Alla stazione (two sides). (click here for the handout). This is a two way translation I would like us to do in class next week. It has some adverbs and adverbial phrases. Read it, practice it ALOUD and bring questions to class.
6. Is there anybody who would like to bring five vocabulary words next week?
7. La Pietanziera. This is for you to enjoy. The story is written using the imperfetto and the passato remoto, so I think you should read it in English first and then read the Italian! and enjoy the picture that Italo Calvino is painting.
8. Piacere (handout 18) Read about piacere and do the exercises. Stop at the beginning of the section "The other uses of piacere". Also do Practice Set 81 in our book (pages 211, 212).
9. Handout 20: "Cosa facciamo stasera?" Practice these phrases to invite someone to do something, to say if you are free or busy... Practice them enough to be able to use them next week in class.
