-compiti (homework) is at the bottom of this page.
____________________________________________________
-Gli argomenti (the topics): What we did in class, and more.
-Warmup: We asked each other how the week went. We wrote the responses up on the board. And then we corrected them.
Com'è andata la settimana? - How did the week go?
Cosa mi racconti della settimana? - What can you tell me about the week?
Hai fatto qualcosa di bello la settimana scorsa? - Did you do anything nice last week?
Cosa c'è di nuovo? - What's new?
topics:
- Riflessivi.
-We made corrections to the sentences you made up for the "reflexive". We clarified some common mistakes which are made with reflexive verbs.
fermare - to stop something
fermarsi - to stop yourself, to "stop off" somewhere
smettere di (plus an infinitive) - to stop doing something
mettersi - to put on clothes, jewelry...
indossare - to put on, to wear, to model
vestirsi - to get dressed
portare - to wear, or to carry
Sposarsi - to get married
Don't use the possessive with reflexive verbs.
Mi lavo le mani.
Mi mette il cappotto.
Mi lavo i denti.
- Futuro. We practiced "two clause" futuro sentences using "Se..." and "Appena..."
Appena avrò abbastanza soldi, andrò in italia. - As soon as I will have enough money, I will go to Italy.
Se pioverà, non faremo una gita. - If it rains, we won't take the excursion.
You read your sentences in English, and everyone had to try to write down the Italian translation using both clauses in the futuro.
- Two verbs together in a sentence.
If these are before an infinitive, they need a preposition:
smettere di. Ho smesso di fumare.
cominciare a. Ho cominciato a parlare.
andare a. Sono andata a trovarli. - I went to go visit them.
venire a. Sono venuti a trovarmi. - They came to visit me.
In English, you would say:
"I forgot to tell you..."
"I'm waiting to go..."
"I'm learning to speak Italian."
"We're trying to leave tomorrow."
"They're learning to play the violin."
"She's helping her mother wash the cat."
In Italian, when you have two verbs in a sentence, you conjugate the first one, sometimes add a preposition, then use the infinitive of the second verb. The first verb determines whether or not you use a preposition, and which preposition to use:
Voglio andare. - I want to go. (volere doesn't require a preposition before the infinitive)
Comincio a lavorare. - I'm starting to work. (cominciare takes "a" before the infinitive)
Finisco di pranzare. - I'm finishing eating lunch. (finire takes "di" before the infinitive)
You will just need to memorize these. Also see page 190.
-Direct object pronouns. I gave everybody a verb infinitive. They were all transitive verbs.
mangiare, vedere, aspettare, trovare...
We went around and you had to make up a sentence (in io) in the present tense with a direct object.
You said your sentence with the object,
Aspetto Gina.
then you had to change the object to a pronoun and say the sentence again.
La aspetto.
Then you had to say the sentence in the passato prossimo using the noun,
Ho aspettato Gina.
then again with the pronoun.
La ho aspettata.
Some had to change the past participle to agree (in the case of la, li, and le).
Remember, you can elide lo and la, but not li or le.
L'ho...
L'ho...
Li ho...
Le ho...
- Reading. We read "In ferie".
-Dialogo. Ed, Gilan, and Vittorio performed "È a sinistra." Ben fatto! Bravi!!
-Parole da ricordare (Words to remember)
non affatto - not at all
comportarsi bene - to behave well
comportarsi male - to behave badly
sposarsi - to get married
fuggi fuggi - stampede, "Flee, flee!", hectic
Ho saputo la verita. - I found out the truth.
Ho conosciuto Gina. - I met Gina for the first time.
In quanti siamo? - How many of us are there?
Siamo in otto. - There are eight of us.
la mano / le mani - hand, hands
Re: Lasagne o lasagna??
La lasagna è la sfoglia di pasta usata per fare le lasagne, il piatto, ma le due parole vengono usate abbastanza indifferentemente... (Grazie a WordReference.com!! If you aren't using this great resource, give it a try. You can even add the WordReference tool to your iGoogle homepage.)

-Compiti
1. Practice these again, we'll use them next week:
Com'è andata la settimana? - How did the week go?
Cosa mi racconti della settimana? - What can you tell me about the week?
Hai fatto qualcosa di bello la settimana scorsa? - Did you do anything nice last week?
Cosa c'è di nuovo? - What's new?
2. Check your answers (click here) from E3 through E7 from the "Future" handout (handout # 7 from week 2) . Actually, exerecises 9 and 10 are also good. Try those. Those answers are also posted.
3. Read the handout "È a sinistra" (ivory) from the dialogue which Vittorio, Gilan, and Edoardo performed. Answer the questions. It's always good to try to memorize a dialog. Fun and educational! Give it a try.
4. Read the handout 8. (ivory) "Dove andrai?" (If you weren't in class, this was emailed to you.) Answer the questions on the back.
5. Imperativo. Start to read handout 11 (white) "Imperative". Read the first section: "Regular forms".
(In the discussion of the "Lei" imperative, you might not understand the reference to the "present subjunctive forms". We'll talk about it in class.)
The imperative is also introduced in our book on page 176-177.
6. Direct object pronouns. Memorize the direct object pronouns, which you will find on page 206. Do Practice Sets 75 and 76. (Practice Set 75 is a little goofy to me. Hard to follow. You could make up your own practice instead if you want.) Do the front side of the pink handout "Follow the pattern..."
7. Two verbs in a sentence (in the website, above. Also on page 190 in our book). Think of sentences in English that you would want to know how to say in Italian. Bring them to class. (smettere di... andare a... cominciare a... )
Hoai, Cynzia, and Tessy will perform a dialogue for us.
Louise will also present five vocabulary words.
