-Gli argomenti (the topics): What we did in class, and more.

-Warmup: Marina ci ha raccontato del suo viaggio in Italia. Ci ha fatto vedere delle foto di Scanno, di se stessa in costume tradizionale, e di un borgo a nord di Roma.

We asked each other what we did last week. Here are some questions you can ask somebody to ask them about their week:
Com'è andata la settimana? - How did the week go?
Cosa mi racconti della settimana? - What can you tell me about the week?
Hai fatto qualcosa di bello la settimana scorsa? - Did you do anything nice last week?

topics:
-Passato Prossimo. We read all the sentences from the homework handout: "Oggi / ieri".

- Futuro. We went over the white handout (handout #7 from last week). It was pretty difficult! Avevate ragione! Era in realtà troppo difficile! We conjugated a few irregular forms. We went over E1 and E2. We skipped to E8 (the difficult part) and saw that the Italians typically use futuro to express the ideas of speculation, probability, and concession:
"That car must cost 20,000 euros!" - Quella macchina costerà 20 mila euro!
"They must be at school." - Saranno a scuola.
"He may be right." - Avrà ragione.
"It must be six o'clock." - Saranno le sei.

- Two verbs together in a sentence. In English, you would say:
"I forgot to tell you..."
"I'm waiting to go..."
"I'm learning to speak Italian."
"We're trying to leave tomorrow."
"They're learning to play the violin."
"She's helping her mother wash the cat."

In Italian, when you have two verbs in a sentence, you conjugate the first one, sometimes add a preposition, then use the infinitive of the second verb. The first verb determines whether or not you use a preposition, and which preposition to use:
Voglio andare. - I want to go. (volere doesn't require a preposition before the infinitive)
Comincio a lavorare. - I'm starting to work. (cominciare takes "a" before the infinitive)
Finisco di pranzare. - I'm finishing eating lunch. (finire takes "di" before the infinitive)
You will just need to memorize these. Also see page 190.
click here for some examples of two verbs in a sentence.

- Unusual nouns. We talked for a few minutes about regular nouns that end in "e" but can be either masculine or feminine. (Notice that, in the plural, they always end in "i".)
il cantante > i cantanti
la cantante > le cantanti

l'insegnante > gli insegnanti
l'insegnante > le insegnanti

We talked about irregular nouns ending in "ista". Although both masculine and feminine are the same in the singular, they are different in the plural:
il barista > i baristi
la barista > le bariste

l'artista > gli artisti
l'artista > le artiste

these follow the same pattern: pianista, giornalista, specialista, ottimista, dentista, turista...

- Reflexive verbs. We pretended we were at a museum. We went around a circle, using reflexive verbs to describe what we were doing, and what other people were doing. "Siamo al museo d'arte." "Mi addormento." "Ti rilassi." "Tessy si diverte." "Louisa si è persa." (ecc.)

- "Penso a..." (I'm thinking of...) We played this game of describing a person, place, or thing.

-Parole da ricordare (Words to remember)

fino a - until
sfoglia - a sheet of pasta dough
il Trecento - the thirteen-hundreds, (the fourteenth century)
il quattordicesimo secolo - the fourteenth century
sveltirsi - to liven up
fra poco - in a little while
Se vuoi... - If you want...
Se volete... - If you guys want...
quandè che.... - When is it that....?
il tuo successo - your success

-Compiti
1. Memorize all four of these phrases to ask each other about the week:
Com'è andata la settimana? - How did the week go?
Cosa mi racconti della settimana? - What can you tell me about the week?
Hai fatto qualcosa di bello la settimana scorsa? - Did you do anything nice last week?
Cosa c'è di nuovo? - What's new?

2. Memorize, from the "Future" handout (handout # 7 from last week) the irregular forms of essere, andare, fare, potere, bere, venire.
Also, I would like you to finish the exercises E3, E4, E5, E6, and E7. I would also like you to write a few sentences using Se... (If...) and Appena... (As soon as...). Write sentences in which both clauses of the sentence use the futuro.
For example:
"As soon as I will get paid, I will buy a car."
"As soon as they will leave, we will sleep."
"If Maria will have time tomorrow, we will go to the beach."
"If you will finish on time, we will go to the restaurant."

3. Finish reading the handout from last week "In Ferie." (#6, purple). Answer the questions. If you have time, write a postcard from Italy to your friend (on a piece of paper to hand in).

4. Read the handout 8. (ivory) "Dove andrai?" (If you weren't in class, this was emailed to you.) Answer the questions on the back.

5. Direct object pronouns. Memorize the direct object pronouns, which you will find on page 206. (that's in Practice Set 75)

6. Two verbs in a sentence (in the website, above). Think of three sentences in English that you would want to know how to say in Italian. Bring them to class.

Vittorio, Gilan, e Edoardo will perform a dialogue for us.
Vittorio (?) or Louise (?) will also present five vocabulary words.
