____________________________________________________

-Gli argomenti (the topics): What we did in class, and more.

-Phrase of the week: "Non vedo l'ora di..." - "I can't wait to..."
Mary-Lynn non vede l'ora di studiare l'italiano.

-Warmup: Le romane e le turiste: We used words like "Cerco..., Ho bisogno di... , Dov'è..?, C'è...? , " to find what we needed.
Scusi, dov'è la stazione?
Buongiorno, per favore... ho bisogno di una farmacia.
Scusi, c'è una banca qui vicino?
Buongiorno, scusi, cerco il duomo.

-I need, I would like, I feel like, I'm looking for...
Scusi, ho bisogno di un tassì. - Excuse me, I need a taxi.
Vorrei una birra, per favore. - I would like a beer, please.
Voglio una birra, per favore. - I want a beer, please.
Ho voglia di un caffè. - I feel like a coffee.
Cerco un bancomat. - I'm looking for an ATM.
C'è un buon ristorante qui vicino? - Is there a good restaurant near here?
Dov'è la piazza? - Where is the piazza?

Remember,
"Ho bisogno di..." means "I need...".
Use "Vorrei..." to say "I would like..."
Use "Ho voglia di..." if you want to say that you feel like doing something.
"Cerco..." means "I'm looking for...".
"C'è..." means "Is there...?" or "There is..."
"Dov'è...?" means "Where is...?"
These will come in handy in all kinds of situations!

- giving directions.

a sinistra - on the left
a destra - on the right
sempre diritto - straight ahead
giri a destra! - turn right
vada dritto! - go straight
un isolato - a block
due isolati - two blocks
qui, qua - here
lì, là - there

-Verb quiz. Regular verbs:lasciare, perdere, aprire, spedire,
Irregular verbs: fare, potere

-Reflexive verbs. (Verbi reflessivi) When the action of a verb reflects back toward the subject of that verb, then that verb is reflexive:

I get myself up. Mi alzo.

We did the exercise "Tommaso's Day".
We talked about where the reflexive pronoun goes in a sentence if you use a modal verb and a reflexive infinitive:
Posso alzarmi presto. - "I am able to get up early."
Can also be said: Mi posso alzare presto. (moving the reflexive pronoun "mi" in front of the modal verb.)
The reflexive pronoun always agrees with the subject of the sentence.

-Reciprocal verbs. Verbs like "Ci vediamo." "Ci incontriamo."
to indicate an action that people are doing to each other.
Ci vediamo. - We will see each other.
Vi salutate. - You guys say hello to each other.
Si incontrano. - They get together, they meet up.

-Definite article: "the"

To use the definite article, you will use either il, l’, lo, la, i, gli, or le before a noun, depending on whether the noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural, and what letter the noun starts with. (It's always about how it sounds to the Italian ear: Notice:
lo studente but il prossimo studente and lo stesso studente
i ragazzi
but gli altri ragazzi and gli stessi ragazzi
la ragazza
but l'altra ragazza
You choose the article that flows with the first letter of the word (sound) that immediately follows it.

singular

plural

il ragazzo

i ragazzi

masculine

l’amico

gli amici

lo studente

gli studenti

feminine

la ragazza

le ragazze

l’amica

le amiche

-definite article. We went up to the board, and had to choose the noun to write under the appropriate article. (Some were a bit tricky...)
Il caffè. - the coffee
I caffè. - the coffees
La bici. (La bicicletta) - the bicycle
Le bici. (Le biciclette) - the bicycles

click here for "the rules of how to form the definite article"

-Vocabolario. Cyndie's words: la mucca, il maiale, il cavallo, il pollo, la pecora

- Possessivi with family members. People brought family photos. We described them to each other:
Eccomi. - Here I am.

notice that you do not use the definite article "il, la, i, le" with your relatives:
Questa è mia nuora. - This is my daughter-in-law.
Questo è mio bisnonno. - This is my great-grandfather.

you do use the definite article "il, la, i, le" with someone you are not related to:
Questo è il mio insegnante. - This is my teacher.
Ecco l'amico di mio figlio. - Here is my son's friend.

you do use the definite article "il, la, i, le" with plural relatives, modified relatives, or "their" (il loro, la loro, i loro, le loro) relatives.
Ecco le mie cugine. - Here are my girl cousins.
Ecco il mio suocero divertente. - Here is my funny father-in-law.
