Verbi. We reviewed the present tense of three irregular verbs essere, avere, stare.
and the regular -are, -ere, -ire verbs.
We added four more irregular -are verbs: dare, stare, fare, andare.
Indefinite article. (from handout 2: "Al bar")

Modal verbs. We practiced asking each other questions using the present tense of volere.
Vuole andare al mare con me?
Si, voglio andare al mare con te!
Vogliono andare in centro con noi?

- -Avere idioms: expressions which use the verb "to have" (avere) in Italian. (In English, we use the verb "to be" in most of these idioms). See page 36 in our book, or look at your favorite grammar text.

- Ho sete. - I'm thirsty. - (literally: I have thirst)
- Hai fretta? - Are you in a hurry. - (lit: Do you have haste?)
- Maria ha paura. - Maria is afraid. - (Maria has fear.)
- Abbiamo freddo. - We're cold. - (We have cold.)
- Avete fame? - Are you (plural) hungry? - (Do you have hunger.)
- Hanno voglia di una pizza? - Do they feel like having pizza? - (Do they have the desire of a pizza?)

- -Reflexive verbs.

Verbi reflessivi: When the action of a verb reflects back toward the subject of that verb, then that verb is reflexive:
I get myself up. Mi alzo.
I have myself a good time. Mi diverto.
You find yourself in Rome. Ti trovi a Roma.
The infinitive of a reflexive verb is indicated by placing the suffix -si at the end:
alzarsi
divertirsi
trovarsi
To conjugate a reflexive verb, you will also be changing the reflexive pronoun:
mi lavo, ti lavi, si lava. ci laviamo, vi lavate, si lavano.

- Reflexive verbs must be used with a reflexive pronoun. "si" means himself, herself, yourself (formal), or themselves. All the other reflexive pronouns are the same as the direct object pronouns: mi, ti, ci, vi

- Some verbs are almost always used reflexively:
- Mi rilasso. I'm relaxing.
- Ci divertiamo. We're having fun.
- _
- Others can be used either way: reflexively or transitively.
- Metto la pistola sul pavimento. I'm putting the gun on the floor.
- Mi metto il cappotto. I'm putting on my coat.

- Sento la musica. I hear the music.
- Mi sento bene. I feel well.
- -Pronouns after a preposition (This topic came up in class. Discussed on page 247 of our book.)

- Questo è per Lei.
- Non vanno da lui. *"da" in this sentence means "at the place of."

- 2. Reflexive verbs. Read handout 4 "Reflexive verbs" (pink). Write the answers for "Tommaso's day", in the regular present tense. Some of the verbs are reflexive, and some are not.

- 3. Reflexive verbs. On a piece of paper to hand in, write five to ten original sentences using reflexive verbs. Try to use some of these verbs: rilassarsi, divertirsi, prepararsi, sentirsi...

6. Avere idioms. These are listed on page 36. Please add "avere bisogno di..." (to need). Optional: do Practice Set 13 Parts C and D (page 37, 38) and the Reading and Comprehension Activity for Chapter 3 (page 39)
7. Dare, stare, fare, andare. Memorize the conjugations in the present tense for these irregular verbs. (these are all listed in the back of the text, starting on page 296) (optional,do the exercises on both sides of handout 3 "Verbi" (gold).
8. Bring a photo of your family or friends. Be ready to talk about them using possessives and describing them with adjectives.
9. Prepositions. (handout 7) Read side one of the handout, we'll do the exercises later. Also look at the prepositions on page 159 of the book.
