    - Piacere (this is more than we did in class, but here it is!)
You say "Piacere" when you meet someone.
"Mi piace" when one thing is pleasing to you (to say you like something)
"Mi piacciono" when more than one thing is pleasing to you.
"Non mi piace" when one thing displeases you (to say you don't like something)
"Non mi piacciono" when more than one thing displeases you.

"Mi piace sciare" - I like to ski. "To ski" is the subject. "Mi" is the indirect object of the verb "piacere". Here are the indirect object pronouns: mi, ti, le, gli, Le, ci, vi, gli
"Che cosa ti piace fare?" - What do you like to do?
"Mi piace suonare la chitarra." - I like to play the guitar.

"Le piace?" - Does she like it? (or) Do you (formal) like it?
"Gli piace?" - Does he like it? (or) Do they like it?
"Mi piacciono la festa e la musica." The party and the music are pleasing to me. (I like the party and the music.) The verb is plural because the subject is plural: "la festa e la musica" is the subject. "Mi" is the indirect object of "piacere".

    -Sapere, conoscere
    Sapere means "to know how..." or "to know..." a fact.
    Conoscere means "to know or be familiar with..." something or someone, or "to meet..." someone for the first time.

Sapere – to know or to know how
1.         I know how to dance.         (ballare)
2.         Do you (tu) know how to sing?                  (cantare)
3.         Does he know how to play guitar?         (suonare la chitarra)
4.         Do you (Lei) know the number?         (il numero)
5.         We know where the restaurant is.         (dove si trova il ristorante.)
6.         You (voi) know a lot.         (molto)
 
Conoscere – to be familiar with
1.         I know that hotel.                  (quell’albergo)
2.         Do you (tu) know Dario?                  (Dario)
3.         Does she know Rome?         (Roma)
4.         Do you (Lei) know my sister?                  ( mia sorella)
5.         We don’t know your brother.                  (tuo fratello)
6.         Do you (voi) know my mother?                  (mia madre)
7.         They’re familiar with that song.                  (quella canzone)

- Verbi - modal verbs: volere, potere, dovere. Memorize the conjugations.

volere - to want to_____- voglio, vuoi, vuole. vogliamo, volete, vogliono.
potere - to be able to, to be allowed to_____- posso, puoi, può. possiamo, potete, possono.
dovere - to have to , "must"_____- devo, devi, deve. dobbiamo, dovete, devono.

These verbs are very useful.

You can use them alone:

Voglio una birra. - I want a beer.
Volete una camera? - Do you (voi) want a room?
Posso? - May I?
Quanto Le devo? - How much do I owe you?

You can conjugate them and add an infinitive:

Deve cambiare a Padova. - You have to change (trains) in Padova.
Vogliamo pagare adesso. - We want to pay now.
Dobbiamo aspettare? - Do we have to wait?
Voglio andare adesso. - I want to go now.
Devo finire questa email. - I must finish this email.
Devo lasciare il passaporto? Do I have to leave a passport?
Deve cambiare a Padova. You have to change (trains) at Padova.
Posso restare qui? - May I stay here?
Posso pagare con un carta di credito? Can I pay with a credit card?
Possiamo fare una prenotazione? Can we make a reservation?
Voglio chiamare un tassì. I want to call a taxi.
Vogliamo prendere l'autobus. We want to take the bus.
(Remember Vorrei... is a more polite form of voglio, expressing "I would like". You can use it in the same way as voglio "I want".

Vorrei comprare questo. I would like to buy this.
Vorrei fare la prima colazione. I would like to eat breakfast.

Volere + an infinitive
1.         I want to go now.

4.             Must you (voi) bring so many things? (così tante cose)
5.             They must start now.
6.             Must I wait long?
7.             You (tu) must buy a token. (un gettone)
8.             Signora, you must take the train.
9.             We must speak Italian.
10.         You (voi) must leave the suitcase here.
11.         They must reserve a seat. (un posto)
