- Accento grave: è
The usual accent in Italian is the accento grave: è if an "e" has a grave accent, it's pronounced as an "open e"
as in English "let".
- Accento acuto: é perché, né, poiché, finché are the only common Italian words with the accento acuto. Their "e" is pronounced as a "closed e", as in English "late".

- Conoscere, sapere: have different meanings when used in the imperfetto and passato prossimo.
Conoscevo una cantante. - I knew a singer.
Ho conosciuto una cantante. - I met a singer.
Sapevo che Mario era sposato. - I knew that Mario was married.
Ho saputo che Mario era sposato. - I found out that Mario was married.

- choosing avere or essere in passato prossimo: There are some verbs which can take essere or avere as the auxiliary in passato prossimo, depending on context.
Sua figlia è cresciuta in fretta. - Her daughter grew up fast. (intransitive)
Sua figlia ha cresciuto dei fiori. - Her daughter grew flowers. (transitive)

La macchina è passata. - The car went by. (intransitive)
Ha passato il sale. - He passed the salt. (transitive)

Sono scesa dalla bicicletta. - I got off of the bike. (intransitive)
Abbiamo sceso la montagna. - We descended the mountain. (transitive)

1. Essere o non essere (gold handout, side 1.) Finish 1 through 10. (click here for answers)
2. Conoscere, sapere (in the imperfetto, and passato prossimo): Write four original sentences to hand in. See the "conoscere, sapere" section above.
3. Two verbs together: (pink handout) Translate 1 through 24 on side 1 into English. Find these verbs on your white "Appendix" handout from last week. Some of the verbs on the pink handout do NOT appear on the white "Appendix" handout. Number 16 is "innamorarsi di" - to fall in love with. Number 18 is "vivere di" - "to live on". Also: I decided that you can do side two of this handout. So do it. (click here for answers)
4. Imperativo. - Memorize the irregular imperatives from the white handout (click here). Also, do Practice Set 63 on page 177. Since I only want you to practice the noi, voi, and tu forms, you can skip numbers 7,8,9 in Part A, number 7,8,9 in Part B, and numbers 7,8 in Part B.
5. Mark and Claudio: Here's a little translation exercise using the vocabulary and expressions from our dialog. How would you say:
1. You (plural) look great!
2. We find ourselves here in Venice.
3. We haven't talked to each other for a sack of time!
4. I'm staying only for a month.
5. Tomorrow evening, however, I'm free.
