- - Homework from last week: imperfetto vs. passato prossimo. Imperfetto answers the question:
- What was going on?
- What did you used to do?
- Passato prossimo answers the question:
- Sometimes the difference is very distinct, sometimes they can be interchangeable.
- Distinct:
- Faceva bel tempo. It was nice weather. (always imperfetto)
- Pioveva quando Giovanni è arrivato. It was raining (imperfetto) when Giovanni arrived (passato prossimo).
- È piovuto per dieci minuti. It rained (passato prossimo) for ten minutes.
- Interchangeable:
- Avevo un appuntamento con Claudio. (imperfetto to emphasize the situation)
- Ho avuto un appuntamento con Claudio. (passato prossimo to emphasize the action)

-
You say "Piacere" when you meet someone.
-
"Mi piace" when one thing is pleasing to you (to say you like something)
-
"Mi piacciono" when more than one thing is pleasing to you.
-
"Non mi piace" when one thing displeases you (to say you don't like something)
-
"Non mi piacciono" when more than one thing displeases you.
-
"Mi piace sciare" - I like to ski. "To ski" is the subject. "Mi" is the indirect object of the verb "piacere". (do you remember the indirect object pronouns? mi, ti, le, gli, Le, ci, vi, gli)
"Le piace?" - Does she like it? (or) Do you (formal) like it?
"Gli piace?" - Does he like it? (or) Do they like it?
-
"Mi piacciono la festa e la musica." The party and the music are pleasing to me. (I like the party and the music.) The verb is plural because the subject is plural: "la festa e la musica" is the subject. "Mi" is the indirect object of "piacere".
-
In the passato prossimo, the verb piacere takes essere as its auxiliary, which means that the past participle has to agree with the subject.
-

-
Mi è piaciuta la festa.
-
Mi sono piaciuti i film.
