-Compiti (homework)

1. Do Practice set 13: Page 37, 38. Also, read and do page 39. You will find the verb abitare (to live). "Dove abita?" can mean "Where do you live?" or "Where does she live?" or "Where does he live?", and "Abito a Portland" means "I live in Portland."

2. Do the worksheet for Parlate con Noi, second lesson. This is a handout on ivory paper that has questions from 2A "Cambiate dal singolare..." through 2G "Formate una domanda..."

3. Practice and memorize the verb stare (to stay) from page 36.

4. Read and practice vocabulary from the blue page "More Basic Expressions, and How to Ask for Something." Make up situations, and practice saying words like, "Buongiorno!" ... "Scusi! Vorrei un bicchiere di vino!" ... "Scusi!"... "C'è un bar qui vicino?" ...with emotion. Picture yourself in the situation.

5. Finish Practice Set 39. Do part B. Practice your numbers from one through one hundred. 1 – 20   (click the "play triangle" to listen) to numbers one through twenty.

6. Write a few original sentences using the avere idioms (page 36) that we talked about in class. for example:
Ho voglia di una birra.
Ho bisogno di una farmacia.

-Avere idioms

expressions which use the verb "to have" (avere) in Italian. (In English, we use the verb "to be" in most of these idioms).

Ho sete. - I'm thirsty. - (literally: I have thirst)

Hai fretta? - Are you in a hurry. - (lit: Do you have haste?)

Maria ha paura. - Maria is afraid. - (Maria has fear.)

Abbiamo freddo. - We're cold. - (We have cold.)

Avete fame? - Are you (plural) hungry? - (Do you have hunger.)

Hanno voglia di una pizza? - Do they feel like having pizza? - (Do they have the desire of a pizza?)

-Remember, we added one more idiom to this list: Avere bisogno di... (to need)

Ho bisogno di un bancomat. - I need an ATM. - (I have need of an ATM.)

ho,  hai,  ha.  abbiamo, avete, hanno.

If you want to ask how someone is doing (staying) you will use stare.

"Come sta tua madre?" - How is your mother?

If you want to ask what someone is like, use the verb essere - to be

"Com'è tua madre?" - What is your mother like?

-I need, I would like, I feel like, I'm looking for...

Scusi, ho bisogno di un tassì.

Vorrei una birra, per favore.

Ho voglia di un caffè.

Cerco un bancomat.

Remember,

"Ho bisogno di..." means "I need...".

Use "Vorrei..." with a waiter, salesperson, or friend, to say "I would like..."

Use "Ho voglia di..." if you want to say that you feel like doing something.

"Cerco..." means "I'm looking for...".

These will come in handy in all kinds of situations!
