Level One, Tuesday September 25 Lesson One Prima Lezione

-Compiti (homework)

 1.  Read pages 23 through 34 in your text.  Either do the exercises on these pages, or make up your own way to learn the material that is important to you in this section.

2.  Practice and memorize the conjugations of avere and essere.  Write them, and say them out loud while you’re walking the dog.

3.  Use the little booklet “Parlate con Noi” to answer the questions on the one-page handout.

4.  Memorize the numbers 1 through 20 (or 30?).  You can use pages 128 and 129 for exercises to help you learn them.

5.  Read the green handout on caffè and the four short dialogs on the other side.

 -How to introduce yourself:

buon giorno – Good morning

buona sera – good evening

Mi chiamo _______ - my name is _________

come si chiama? – What is your name?

piacere – it’s a pleasure

Di dov’è? – where are you from?

Sono di ________ - I’m from __________

 

 -Saying hello:

Buongiorno – hello, or good morning, or good day

Buona sera – good evening

Ciao! – hello

Come sta? – how are you? (formal)

Come stai? – how are you? (familiar)

Sto bene – I’m well.

Benissimo! – very well!

Molto bene – very well

Così così – OK

Come va? – How is it going?

Va bene – it’s going well. (also means “OK””)

Non c’è problema. – No problem.

 

 -We learned:

signore – sir

signora – madam

signorina – miss

(remember, you don’t need to say “signore” after you say “hello” to someone you don’t know.)

examples:

to a woman: “Buongiorno, signora.”

to a young woman: “Buongiorno signorina.”

to a man: “Buongiorno.”

To introduce someone to somebody else, “Ti presento ________” (familiar)

or “Le presento __________” (formal)

 

-Other words and phrases:

e Lei? – and you? (formal)

e tu? – and you? (familiar)

anche - also

anche io sto bene. – I, too, am well.

Ecco.... – Here is ...   (when pointing out something or someone)

questo - this

questa - this (feminine)

-some question words:

che cosa? – what?

cosa? – what?

chi? – who?

 

Che cos’è? – What is that?

È un libro. – It’s a book.

Chi è? – Who is it?

È Mario. – It’s Mario.

 

-Words for asking for information:

Capisco. – I understand.

Non capisco. – I don’t understand.

Ho una domanda. – I have a question.

Come si dice “lemonade?” – How do you say “lemonade?”

Cosa vuol dire “una limonata?” – What does “una limonata” mean?

 

 -L’articolo indeterminativo.  Indefinite article (a, an in English)   In your book on page 53.

Tutto a posto – Everything’s OK

In bocca al lupo! – Good luck!   (response: “Crepi!)
