-What we did in class:

- l'alfabeto: We recited the Italian alphabet.

- la pronuncia: We tried to say our "p"s and "t"s without a puff of air coming out of our mouths.

-Modal verbs: We practiced speaking in third-person (formal) using the modal verbs.
Deve andare alla stazione. - You have to go to the station.
Vuole vedere la città? - Do you want to see the city?
Può lasciare le valige qui. - You can leave the suitcases here.

-Preposizioni:
Often, when you use the prepositions di, a, da, in, and su they will be followed by an object which needs an article:
to the restaurant
from the track
on the table
_
usually, the preposition and the article are combined into a contraction:
a + il = al
Vado al ristorante. - I'm going to the restaurant.
_
da + il = dal
Il treno parte dal terzo binario. - The train leaves from the third track.
_
su + la = sulla
Il libro è sulla tavola. - The book is on the table.
_
in + l' = nell'
Vado nell'Italia del Sud. - I'm going to southern Italy.
_
Exceptions: there are many common set phrases which do not take a combined preposition + article! Mostly with in and a.
Here are some common ones:
Sono in centro. - I'm downtown. "...in centro" is a set phrase. You just have to memorize it.
Vado in montagna. - I'm going to the mountains. "...in montagna" is a set phrase.
...in cucina - in the kitchen
...in sala da pranzo - in the dining room (and other rooms of the house)
...in biblioteca - to/in the library
...in banca - to/in the bank
...in farmacia - to/in the pharmacy
...in campagna - in the countryside
...in chiesa - to/in the church
...in piazza - to/in the piazza
...in ufficio - to/in the office
...in città - to/in the city
...a casa - to/in the house
...a letto - to/in bed
...a teatro - to/in the theater
...a cena - to dinner
...a scuola - to/in school

Attenzione: if you make your sentence more specific, you will use the combined article:
Vado in biblioteca.
Vado nella biblioteca comunale.
Sono in ufficio.
Sono nell'ufficio del direttore.

It is not a big mistake if you do not make this distinction in conversation.
_
--Preposizioni: di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra/fra, dentro, fuori, sopra, sotto, davanti a, dietro.
"Siamo in piazza..." We practiced these prepositions by making up sentences..
Che cosa è sopra il negozio?
C'è un appartamento sopra il negozio.
La statua e davanti alla fontana.
Vado da Giuseppe.

-Strega comanda color... We played this childrens' game to review the names of colors. (page 114)

-Dialog: Di dove sei? We listened to this dialog between an American girl and a local ragazzo.

-Parole da ricordare (these are useful words that come up during class)
in bocca al lupo - Good luck! (lit: Into the mouth of the wolf!)
materia - subject (of a class) Quale materia studi? Studio l'italiano!
fare colazione - to have breakfast
pranzare - to have lunch
cenare - to have dinner
la prima colazione - the breakfast
il pranzo - the lunch
la cena - the dinner
cucinare - to cook
cuocere - to cook, to bake, to roast...
dare del "tu" - to converse using the familiar
dare del "Lei" - to converse using the formal
Dammi del "tu". - Use the familiar with me!
Mi dia del "Lei". - Use the formal with me!

-Compiti (homework). The answers to all these Practice Sets are in the back of the text. Check your answers, and bring your questions to class. Questions are good.

1. Practice Set 57: Preposizioni. Read, and do the sentences. This will take a little study.

2. Practice Set 35: Useful words. If you've done this practice set before, I want you to write original sentences using the words from Practice Set 35.

3. Practice Set 90: Using the possessive with family members. Read, and do the exercises.

4. Using the possessive with family members. Choose a few photos of family and/or friends to bring to our next class. Write a few sentences (in Italian) describing the people in the photos that you are going to bring. Look at page 227 for a list of words for relatives.

5. Dialog handout:"Di dove sei?" (which we did in class). On the handout page with the dialog, fill in the blanks in the exercises about the dialog.

6. (optional) Practice Set 88: Possessives. (On part D, the verb is in the past tense, but you should still be able to do this exercise.)
