Always put the article "il" in front of the number of the day of the month. The first of the month is a bit of an exception, because you say "Il primo marzo", "Il due marzo", "Il tre marzo"...ecc. (Also correct is: "Il primo di marzo", "Il due di marzo", "Il tre di marzo"... ecc)
For the number of the year, you can always spell it as one long word (duemilaotto)
or separate it (duemila otto).

-Uscire. I checked with my friend Nadine, and here are some elegant ways to use the verb uscire (to go out) and fuori (out) when you are going out:

uscire a cena - to go out to dinner
andare fuori a cena - to go out to dinner
uscire insieme - to go out together (dating)
portare fuori a cena qualcuno - to take someone out to dinner
andare al cinema - to go to a movie

Usciamo a cena! - Let's go out to dinner.
Andiamo fuori a cena! - Let's go out to dinner.
Usciamo insieme. - We're going out together. (dating)
Ti porto fuori a cena. - I'm taking you out to dinner.
Andate al cinema? - Are you guys going to the movies?

-Gianni had some good review sentences.
"Com'è?" - What is he like?
"È abbastanza intelligente, ma noioso." - He's intelligent enough, but boring.

-Modal verbs: dovere, potere, volere (you can find the conjugations on page 190). These verbs are very useful. You can use them alone:
Voglio una birra. (I want a beer.)
Volete una camera? (Do you (voi) want a room?)
Posso? (May I?)
Quanto le devo? (How much do I owe you?)
You can conjugate them and add an infinitive:
Deve cambiare a Padova. (You have to change (trains) in Padova.)
Vogliamo pagare adesso. (We want to pay now.)
Dobbiamo aspettare? (Do we have to wait?)

Ho bisogno di un tassì. - I need a taxi.
Ho voglia di un bicchiere di vino. - I feel like a glass of wine.

C'è un bancomat qui vicino? - Is there an ATM nearby?

-Romani e turisti: we divided the class into Romans and tourists, and asked for directions to una farmacia, una fermata dell'autobus, la tabaccheria, un bancomat, e l'ufficio postale. The Romani gave directions: see "Dove" handout (in the compiti) for direction words.

-Possessivi: see homework handout "Aggettivi possessivi".

mille - a thousand. Remember, you don't use the article "un" with mille.

Faccio pratica - I'm practicing.
Sono fuori allenamento - I'm out of practice. I'm out of shape. (physical or mental)
Mi esercito a parlare italiano. - I'm practicing speaking Italian.
Mi da fastidio. - It's annoying to me.
Sei sicuro? - Are you sure? (masculine)
Sei sicura? - Are you sure? (feminine)

-Compiti (homework). The answers to all these Practice Sets are in the back of the text. Check your answers, and bring your questions to class. Questions are good.

1. Modal verbs, handout (gold) click here. The answers are included. And modal verbs are conjugated for you on page 190. Memorize their conjugations. (some people may have gotten an old version of the handout in class. The answer for "potere" #6 should be: Non possono provare il vino.)

2. Aggettivi possessivi handout (white). Reread this section, and do the esercizi A through C. On parts B and C, you have to picture yourself talking WITH A PARTNER. Remember, if the subject is plural, the verb has to be plural. Click here for answers.

3. Le preposizioni articolate (handout, white). Do only the six rectangular table exercises which start

"a + il = al" (See page 159 for the list of combined prepositions.)

4. Memorize these prepositions and their meanings:

di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra/fra, dentro, fuori, sopra, sotto, davanti a, dietro. (see box on page 159)

5. Learn any of the words from the "Dove" (blue handout) which you don't know already.

6. Next time: bring photos of family and/or friends to class.
