Change the (preposition+pronoun) to an indirect object pronoun:

mi, ti, gli, le, Le, ci, vi, gli.                                    (nuovo p.i.)

As you know, some verbs which take a direct object in English take an indirect object in Italian (and vice-versa). All of the sentences below take an indirect object in Italian. The green translation below is the literal translation, to help you hear it how an Italian hears it.

 

1.     (a lui)    Questi soldi gli permettono di fare una bella vacanza.

This money permits him to make a nice vacation.

These moneys permit to him to make a nice vacation.

2.     (a Lei)    Signor Conti,   Le  chiedo un favore!

Signor Conti, I ask you a favor!

Signor Conti, of you I ask a favor!

3.      (a me)    Di solito, Luigina  mi offre un caffè .

Usually Luigina offers me a coffee.

Usually, Luigina to me offers a coffee.

4.     (a lei)    Le mando un mazzo di fiori per scusarmi.

I'm sending her a bunch of flowers in order to excuse myself (to apologize).

To her I'm sending a bunch of flowers to excuse myself.

5.     (a te)    Ti  facciamo vedere Firenze.

We'll show you Firenze.

To you we'll make to see Florence.

6.     (a me)    Mi dispiace ma devo andare via!

I'm sorry, but I have to go away.

To me it is displeasing, but I have to go away!

7.     (a me)    Mi presti la tua mappa, per favore?

Lend me your map, please?

To me you lend your map, please?

8.     (a loro)    Gli scrivo un’email e spiego i miei programmi (my plans).

I'm sending them an e-mail and explain my plans.

To them I write an e-mail and explain my plans.

9.     (a voi)    Perchè quando  vi canto non mi ascoltate mai?

Why when I sing to you, you never listen to me?

Why when to you I sing, not to me you listen ever?

10.  (a te)      Linda,  ti voglio bene perchè sei brava.

Linda, I like you because you're so good!

Linda, to you I like well because you're so good!

11.  (a me)    La tua polenta  mi piace tantissimo.

Your polenta pleases me a lot!!!

Your polenta to me is soooooo pleasing!!!

12.  (a noi)    Il postino  ci consegna la lettera.

The mailman delivers to us the letter.

The postman to us delivers the letter.

 

Follow the pattern:

If there is a direct object AND an indirect object, put the direct object first. 

Then change the indirect object to a pronoun (mi, ti, gli, le, Le, ci, vi, gli), and place the pronoun before the verb.                                                            (orig.)

 

We asked the waitress for a plate. (alla cameriera)

Abbiamo chiesto un piatto alla cameriera.

Le abbiamo chiesto un piatto.

 

1.     We gave the ticket to the student. (allo studente)

Abbiamo dato il biglietto allo studente.

Gli abbiamo dato il biglietto.

 

2.     We asked (chiedere) a favor of the women. (alle signore)

Abbiamo chiesto un favore alle signore.

Gli abbiamo chiesto un favore.

 

3.     We gave the compost (la composta) to the trees. (agli alberi)

Abbiamo dato la composta agli alberi.

Gli abbiamo dato la composto.

 

4.     We offered (offrire) a coffee to Mario. (a Mario)

Abbiamo offerto un caffè a Mario.

Gli abbiamo offerto un caffè.

 

5.     We telephoned (telefonare) Mom. (alla mamma)

Abbiamo telefonato alla mamma.

Le abbiamo telefonato.

 

6.     We answered (rispondere) the policeman. (al poliziotto)

Abbiamo risposto al poliziotto.

Gli abbiamo risposto.
